The colors of fall have faded. The annual blanket of winter white has not yet descended upon Minnesota. We’ve enter the Brown Season. Things are drab and dead. What green remains we know will shortly be departing.

And so, what better time to peruse a garden in the spring?  Photos can remind us that the colors of the earth are not only drab earth tones, but are also verdant and vibrant colors.

Last spring, on the first day of May, I had a chance to pay a second visit to the beautiful Portland Japanese Garden in Oregon. During the spring there are blooms in the garden, giving a break in the rhythm of what is otherwise mostly lush shades of green.
